By the time they reached Almourol, the sky had turned an ashen gray. They drove past an airport and through an industrial stretch before reaching their isolated destination.

Castelo de Almourol was a medieval castle on a tiny island, really just a hill that was separated from the mainland by a stone’s throw. The water was shallow enough to wade through. Sitting high above the Tagus River on a heap of granite, it served as the perfect lookout. It had once been a Roman fortification that was built up over and over by waves of invading conquerors: the Visigoths, the Berbers, and finally the Knights Templar.

Ridley parked near the shoreline. They got out of the car to a stiff, shockingly cold breeze. Fog had begun to hover and curl upward from the surface of the broad river.

“This is not very Iberian weather,” muttered Ridley as they grabbed the duffels.

“Ifrits can’t control weather, can they?”

“We would’ve heard about that before. This thing would have called down a tornado on us more than once already if it could…right?”
